One of the founding artistic director Suzanne DuPlantis says:

“We wanted to create a program to represent just one year in history, a kind of a panoramic snapshot of the music world of that year. By choosing 1912 we took a century’s look backwards, looking at where we were and how far we’ve come.”

“1912 was indeed a great year. The arts were thriving, new styles and arts movements were developing: blues, operetta, jazz, dance, film… Elgar, Ives and Irving (Berlin) were hitting their strides, Rachmaninoff was still in Russia writing songs, Puccini’s Fanciulla del West traveled all the way to Melbourne, Australia. And it just so happened that this was also the year when the song Happy Birthday to You first appeared in print and, the Titanic sank!”
