Guadalupe: Our lady of the Roses, PIFA event 4/19/2013
This was my first time to the Esperanza Center in North Philadelphia and I was looking forward to a concert that included a number of familiar musicians and a Latino theme. The theater was comfortable but the extremely dry acoustic of the room was better suited for movies or small groups of amplified musicians. An…

STAGEIT offering the world stage in realtime
by David Cohen
Visibility, new fans, possible CD sales, fair percentage, accurate door count, a world tour in one night and at most it takes thirty minutes. Stageit.com is a site that gives artists a platform for concerts reaching fans in real time on-line.
Launched in March of 2011 at the SXSW Music Festival the idea was to create an online video platform that would allow artists to stream and monetize concert-like…

The Passions Of Stanford Thompson
On a damp and dreary Sunday afternoon in December, people gathered in the auditorium of West Philadelphia Catholic High School, West Catholic as it’s affectionately called, not hear a sermon about heaven, hell, sin and redemption, but to hear Beethoven’s Fifth. Proud parents, grandparents,…

Tempesta di Mare: Art of the Prophets
Tempesta di Mare, as the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra, has been filling a void in the musical repertoire for the last ten years. Their latest concert on Saturday evening, December 8, 2012 featured music in Germany from the time just before Bach. The directors, Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone, certainly deserve praise for bringing these all too rare works to life.
Prior to the concert, Professor Tanya Kevorkian of Millersville University, gave a lively, albeit brief history…

Philadelphia Fans of Classical Music - 3 opportunities to get involved

Usually when people think of "classical" music they think of orchestras, or violin virtuosos, or pianists, but they don't necessarily think of guitar. The guitar's typically thought of as a rock instrument. The guitar, however, was a favorite instrument of master orchestrater, Hector Berlioz, violin virtuoso, Níccolo Paganini and pianist Franz Schubert. Berlioz was the first major composer who wasn't a keyboard player and rather would use the guitar to help with harmony, orchestration, etc.…
