Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Verizon Hall, February 17, 2013

Curtis Symphony OrchestraVerizon Hall at the Kimmel CenterFebruary 17, 2013It was a great joy for my husband and me to take friends with us to hear the Curtis Symphony Orchestra last weekend.  The program was excellent starting with a new composition from 2008 called “Rhapsodies for Orchestra” by Steven Stucky conducted by Vinay Parameswaran.  We had the additional fun of having Mr. Stucky attend the concert and speak to us even though he had only been married for four days.  This was indeed…See More

Philadelphia Orchestra - 2/24/12

Sitting in the Conductor's Circle at the Kimmel Center is an exciting experience of sight and secrets revealed.  Who else knew that the face and hands of the conductor, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, were so expressive, and that the solo pianist, Emanuel Ax, glowed with pleasure, and he could hardly wait for his opening notes of the Mozart piano concerto.  I was also reminded of an observation I made in junior high school while singing with our orchestra, that the wind and brass instruments must be…See More

Handel's oratorio,"Judas Maccabaeus" with Morell's libretto.  Not being a musician myself--except for playing the piano when no one else is around--I did not realize that an oratorio is actually an opera without the costly staging. …See More
